The War And Treaty
country soul
The War and Treaty is an American husband-and-wife duo made up of Michael Trotter Jr. and Tanya Trotter, based in Albion, Michigan and active together since 2014. Michael served in the United States Army from 2003 to 2007 as a private first class with the 1st Battalion, 6th Infantry Regiment, and was stationed in Iraq and Germany; he taught himself piano in the basement of a palace while deployed and wrote his first song in memory of his company commander, Captain Robert Scheetz, who was killed on a mission. Tanya had a prior career as a singer and actor. The pair first recorded as Trotter and Blount, releasing Love Affair in 2016, then took the name The War and Treaty in 2017 with the EP Down to the River. Their music pulls Americana, southern soul, gospel, country and rhythm and blues into call-and-response duet singing built on Michael's rasp and Tanya's belt. Healing Tide followed in 2018 and Hearts Town, which features Emmylou Harris, in 2020, before the duo signed to Mercury Nashville for the EP Blank Page (2022), Lover's Game (2023) and Plus One (2025). In 2023 they became the first Black duo nominated for the CMA Award for Duo of the Year and for the equivalent ACM award, and were nominated for the Grammy for Best New Artist and for Best American Roots Song. They have recorded with Zach Bryan on Hey Driver, which reached number 14 on the Billboard Hot 100, with Josh Groban, and with Bon Jovi. They are frequent performers at the Grand Ole Opry.
