Neal McCoy

country · contemporary country

Neal McCoy is a country singer from Jacksonville, Texas, born Hubert Neal McGaughey Jr. in 1958 to an Irish-American father and a Filipino-American mother. He sang first in his church choir and fronted an R&B band before moving into country, and was mentored early on by Charley Pride, who took him on the road as an opening act. He first reached the country charts in 1988 but did not crack the top 40 until 1992. His breakthrough came in 1994 with the platinum album No Doubt About It, which produced the back-to-back number-one singles No Doubt About It and Wink, both of which also crossed onto the Billboard Hot 100. Two more platinum albums and a gold record followed through the late 1990s along with a string of further top-ten country hits, and he returned to the top ten in 2005 with Billy's Got His Beer Goggles On, released through his own label, 903 Music. Across fifteen studio albums he has sent more than thirty singles to country radio, recording for Atlantic, Giant and Warner Bros. before going independent. His later catalog is deliberately varied: a big band project cut with Les Brown, Jr. in 2011, the studio album XII in 2012, a 2013 tribute to Charley Pride featuring Darius Rucker and Trace Adkins, and a Big Band Standards collection in 2015. Away from records, McCoy has performed on fifteen USO tours and has been honored for humanitarian work by the Academy of Country Music, Country Radio Broadcasters and the Masonic Grand Lodge. He founded the East Texas Angel Network, which supports East Texas families with terminally and seriously ill children, and since 2016 he has posted a daily recitation of the Pledge of Allegiance on social media. He lives in Longview, Texas, and tours year-round, including dates at the Grand Ole Opry.
