Darius Rucker is an American singer and songwriter from Charleston, South Carolina, born May 13, 1966. He founded the rock band Hootie & the Blowfish at the University of South Carolina in 1986 with Mark Bryan and Dean Felber, with Jim Sonefeld settling in on drums. The band's 1994 debut Cracked Rear View became one of the best-selling albums ever released in the United States, certified 22 times platinum, and produced the Billboard Hot 100 hits Hold My Hand, Let Her Cry and Only Wanna Be with You; it also brought Grammy Awards for Best New Artist and Best Pop Performance by a Duo or Group in 1995. After the band went on hiatus in 2008, Rucker signed with Capitol Records Nashville and launched a country career, releasing Learn to Live (2008), Charleston, SC 1966 (2010), True Believers (2013), Home for the Holidays (2014), Southern Style (2015), When Was the Last Time (2017) and Carolyn's Boy (2023). Don't Think I Don't Think About It, It Won't Be Like This for Long, Alright, Come Back Song and This all reached number one on the country charts, and his reading of Old Crow Medicine Show's Wagon Wheel topped Country Airplay in May 2013 and won the 2014 Grammy for Best Country Solo Performance; that recording has since joined Spotify's Billions Club. He was inducted as a member of the Grand Ole Opry on October 16, 2012. Hootie & the Blowfish reunited in 2019 for the Group Therapy Tour with Barenaked Ladies and released Imperfect Circle, their sixth studio album, that November. Rucker published a memoir, Life's Too Short, in 2024, and stages an annual benefit concert for St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.
