Sierra Hull

Sierra Hull is a bluegrass mandolinist, singer and songwriter born in Byrdstown, Tennessee in 1991. She took up the mandolin at eight and signed to Rounder Records at thirteen. Her label debut Secrets arrived in 2008, co-produced by Alison Krauss and Ron Block and backed by a roster of Nashville players including Tony Rice, Jerry Douglas, Stuart Duncan, Barry Bales and Rob Ickes; it reached number two on Billboard's bluegrass albums chart when she was sixteen. Daybreak followed in 2011. She attended Berklee College of Music on a Presidential Scholarship while continuing to tour, then made Weighted Mind in 2016, a stripped-back record built on mandolin, voice and bass that broke from conventional bluegrass instrumentation and was nominated for the Grammy for Best Folk Album. 25 Trips came in 2020, and after leaving Rounder she released A Tip Toe High Wire in 2025, her first album in five years and one she made deliberately without much outside input; it drew multiple Grammy nominations, including Best Bluegrass Album. In April 2026 she issued The Movements, a three-part mandolin concerto composed on a FreshGrass Foundation commission and recorded with her touring band, Avery Merritt on fiddle, Erik Coveney on bass, Mark Raudabaugh on drums and Shaun Richardson on guitar. Hull was the first woman to win the International Bluegrass Music Association's Mandolin Player of the Year award and has taken it repeatedly since 2016, part of a run of IBMA honours stretching back to 2010. She has performed at Carnegie Hall, the Grand Ole Opry and the White House, and has recorded or appeared with Alison Krauss, Bela Fleck, Dolly Parton and Brandi Carlile. She lives in Nashville and is married to the multi-instrumentalist Justin Moses.
