Devon Gilfillian

Devon Gilfillian is a Nashville-based soul, blues and roots singer-songwriter originally from Morton, Pennsylvania, outside Philadelphia. His father, Nelson Gilfillian, sang and played percussion in a local band, and Gilfillian took up guitar at fourteen; he earned a psychology degree at West Chester University before moving to Nashville in 2013. He played in a blues cover band there and released a self-titled EP of gospel-inflected blues-rock in 2016. His major-label debut, Black Hole Rainbow, came out on Capitol Records in 2020, produced by Shawn Everett; it was nominated for a Grammy Award for Best Engineered Album, Non-Classical, and produced three entries on Billboard's Adult Alternative Songs chart, with The Good Life reaching number five. In October 2020 he released a track-by-track cover of Marvin Gaye's 1971 album What's Going On, donating all profits to Tennessee's Equity Alliance Fund. His second album, Love You Anyway, appeared on Fantasy Records in 2023, produced by Jeremy Lutito; its single All I Really Wanna Do peaked at number six on the Adult Alternative chart. Gilfillian has played the Newport Folk Festival and the Montreal Jazz Festival and performed at the 2018 NFL Draft, and he has opened for Brothers Osborne, Grace Potter, Mavis Staples, Gladys Knight and Michael McDonald. He has appeared on CBS This Morning, The Late Show with Stephen Colbert and Jimmy Kimmel Live. Onstage he works with a full band, leaning on his own guitar playing and a vocal approach rooted in classic soul rather than the acoustic Americana more common on the Nashville club circuit.
