Mark Wills

country

Mark Wills is an American country singer, born Daryl Mark Williams in Blue Ridge, Georgia in 1973. He played in rock garage bands as a teenager before turning to country, and worked the clubs around Atlanta in the early 1990s before signing with Mercury Nashville in 1996. Five studio albums followed for that label: Mark Wills (1996), Wish You Were Here (1998), Permanently (2000), Loving Every Minute (2001) and And the Crowd Goes Wild (2003). His debut single, Jacob's Ladder, opened a run of hits through the late 1990s that included Places I've Never Been, I Do (Cherish You) and Don't Laugh at Me, a song about bullying and dignity that was certified gold and became closely identified with him. Wish You Were Here went to number one on Billboard's Hot Country Songs chart and its parent album was certified platinum. His biggest record, 19 Somethin', spent six weeks at number one in early 2003. The Academy of Country Music named him top new male vocalist in 1998. He later signed with Clint Black's Equity Music Group and released Familiar Stranger in 2008 and Looking for America in 2011, and has charted roughly nineteen singles across seven albums. Wills was inducted into the Grand Ole Opry on January 11, 2019 as its 218th member, and he continues to appear on the Opry stage regularly. He has performed on numerous USO tours for troops in Iraq, Kuwait, Afghanistan, Korea and Italy. In 2022 he re-recorded Don't Laugh at Me with the a cappella group Home Free and his daughter Macey; the accompanying video won three Gold Telly Awards.
