Ward Davis

Ward Davis is an American country and Americana singer-songwriter from Monticello, Arkansas, who moved to Nashville in 2000. He had self-released the album Nobody's Waiting in 1998, and spent his first Nashville years writing and playing in other people's bands, including Ray Scott's, before growing disillusioned with Music Row and taking an independent route. His songs have been recorded by Willie Nelson, Merle Haggard, Trace Adkins, Wade Hayes and Sammy Kershaw; "Unfair Weather Friend," written with Marla Cannon-Goodman, appears on Nelson and Haggard's final duet album Django and Jimmie, and "I'm Not the Devil," co-written with Cody Jinks, is the title song of Jinks' 2016 album, which reached No. 4 on Billboard's country chart. Davis broke through as a recording artist with 15 Years in a 10 Year Town (2015), followed by the four-song Asunder EP (2018), built around the aftermath of a divorce and including "Live a Lie" and "Good and Drunk," and the 14-track Black Cats and Crows (2020), produced by Jim "Moose" Brown and leaning harder on electric guitars than his earlier work. He returned in February 2026 with Here I Am, again produced by Brown and issued by MNRK Music Group, drawing on material written across nearly two decades and featuring Julianna Rankin alongside session players Dan Dugmore, Brent Mason and Eddie Bayers. Roughly five years sober by that point, Davis has said his writing now starts from lived experience and hindsight rather than the regret that fueled it earlier. He has toured extensively with Cody Jinks, including Red Rocks Amphitheatre, appeared on Conan, and made his Grand Ole Opry debut on March 13, 2026, choosing to share the night with Steve Wariner. He works from the piano at least as much as the guitar onstage, mixing his own records with the songs he wrote for other people.
