TopHouse is a folk band formed in 2016 in Missoula, Montana, where violinist William Cook and guitarist Jesse Davis met in the University of Montana music program and began busking as a duo. Vocalist Joe Larson made them a trio, and pianist Andy LaFave, a Montana friend of the group, became the fourth member after the band relocated to Nashville at the end of 2019. All four grew up in Montana, Larson, Cook and LaFave in Butte and Davis in Kalispell, and their music draws on folk, bluegrass, rock and Irish traditional music, with fiddle and banjo carried by rock-scale dynamics; Larson has described the group as thinking of itself as a rock band. Keyboardist Eli joined officially at the start of 2026 after touring with them as a stand-in. The band arrived in Nashville months before the pandemic shut down touring and spent the lockdown writing; from spring 2022 their social videos found an audience, and their following grew to roughly 300,000 Instagram followers within two years, turning small club dates into sellouts. Their releases include the EP Middle of Somewhere, the album Hopes and Fears (2019), Snapshot (2020), The Irish EP (2022) and Campfire Stories (2023), followed by a pair of companion EPs, the hopeful Theory (May 2024) and the harder-edged Practice (February 2025), later packaged together as the album Theory and Practice. The group made its Grand Ole Opry debut in the fall of 2025 and now tours nationally, playing rooms such as Ardmore Music Hall outside Philadelphia and the Mishawaka Amphitheatre in the Colorado mountains, along with regular Montana dates.
