The Wood Brothers are an American roots trio of brothers Oliver Wood on guitar and vocals and Chris Wood on upright bass and vocals with multi-instrumentalist Jano Rix on drums, keyboards and the shuitar, drawing on folk, blues, gospel and jazz. The brothers grew up in Boulder, Colorado, in a house full of American roots music; their father Bill Wood was a scientist who recorded a folk album with Joan Baez in 1960, and their mother was a poet. They went separate ways for roughly fifteen years, Chris studying jazz bass at the New England Conservatory and co-founding the improvising trio Medeski Martin and Wood in 1992, Oliver moving to Atlanta and fronting the blues and funk band King Johnson through six albums. A one-off reunion on stage in North Carolina in 2001 led them to form the band, which released its debut Ways Not to Lose, produced by John Medeski, on Blue Note in 2006. Loaded followed in 2008, then Smoke Ring Halo (2011) on Zac Brown's Southern Ground label, The Muse (2013), Paradise (2015), the self-produced One Drop of Truth (2018), which was nominated for the Grammy for Best Americana Album, Kingdom in My Mind (2020), Heart Is the Hero (2023) and Puff of Smoke (2025) on Honey Jar and Thirty Tigers. Rix joined as a full member ahead of the 2011 record, and the group has also issued several live albums, among them Live at the Barn and Live at the Fillmore. The brothers relocated to Nashville in the early 2010s, living in the same city for the first time since their twenties. On stage the trio favors improvisation and loose arrangements over fixed ones, and works theaters, opera houses and outdoor rooms such as The Caverns in Pelham, Tennessee.
