Ric Robertson

Ric Robertson is a New Orleans-based Americana singer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist, born Eric William Robertson and raised in North Carolina. His music draws on the mountain music of his home state alongside the jazz, funk, swamp pop and R&B of his adopted city, a mix his own materials call psychamericana. Before making records under his own name he worked as a sideman, touring as a bandmate with Rhiannon Giddens and The Wood Brothers. His albums include The Fool, The Friend (2018), Strange World (2020) and Carolina Child (2021), the last released by Free Dirt Records and produced by Dan Molad of Lucius; it features Jess Wolfe and Holly Laessig of Lucius, Dori Freeman and Nick Falk from Galax, Virginia, and Oliver Wood of The Wood Brothers. The title came from an off-hand remark by New Orleans songwriter Esther Rose, who watched Robertson light up as their tour van climbed into the Blue Ridge Mountains of his home state. Choices and Chains followed in 2024, nine songs recorded quickly in a big old house full of books near Nashville and running just under forty minutes; the title track, issued as a single in October 2024 on Mandocrope Music, is a duet with Sierra Ferrell over a fuzzed-out barroom groove, while The Rain sets airy strings beneath his piano. Robertson often tours alone, traveling with an upright piano and playing without backing tracks or click, leaning on storytelling and in-the-moment musicianship; he also works with a full band and has appeared on bills with Oliver Wood and with Dori Freeman. He plays The Caverns in Pelham, Tennessee.
