ShadowGrass is a bluegrass and jam band out of the Blue Ridge Mountains, where its members grew up across Virginia, North Carolina and Tennessee. It started in 2014 as a pickup jam at the Grayson County Fiddlers Convention in Elk Creek, Virginia, between three childhood friends who were then nine, thirteen and fourteen years old: Clay Russell on banjo, Luke Morris on mandolin and Kyser George on guitar. Madison Morris joined on fiddle and vocals in 2021 and Evan Campfield on upright bass in 2022, completing the current five-piece; Luke Morris and Madison Morris share lead vocals and harmony. The band was chosen as the International Bluegrass Music Association's Youth Council Showcase act in 2016 and had drawn national notice by 2019 through appearances on the public radio program American Routes. George won first place in the 2021 North Carolina State Flatpicking Guitar Championship and the IBMA's 2025 Momentum Award for instrumentalist of the year. The group self-released a self-titled debut in 2022 and its second album, All That Will, on October 4, 2024, written largely by Madison Morris and turning on early-adult anxiety, uncertainty and seasonal change. Sets combine originals, traditional tunes and covers that range from Doc Watson to the Grateful Dead, played with the drive and extended jams of a progressive band like the Infamous Stringdusters rather than a traditional one. The band played roughly 75 to 100 shows in 2024 and treats Denver as a home-away market, returning to Colorado clubs about monthly and holding album release shows in Fort Collins and Denver.
