moe. is an American jam rock band formed in 1989 at the University at Buffalo in Buffalo, New York. The group first performed as Five Guys Named Moe, after the Louis Jordan song, before shortening the name to moe., period included. Its lineup is Rob Derhak on bass and vocals, Chuck Garvey on guitar and vocals, Al Schnier on guitar, keyboards and vocals, Vinnie Amico on drums, Jim Loughlin on percussion and vibraphone, and Nate Wilson on keyboards. The band plays long-form improvisational rock with progressive and psychedelic leanings, built on interlocking twin guitars and composed sections that open out into extended jams, often carried across multiple songs in a set. Its debut album Fatboy appeared in 1992, and moe. became a fixture of the 1990s American improvisational scene alongside Phish and Widespread Panic. The band has played Bonnaroo five times and Woodstock '99, opened for the Allman Brothers Band and the Who, and headlined Radio City Music Hall on New Year's Eve in 2006 and 2007. Since 2000 it has hosted its own festival, moe.down, a multi-day camping event held in Turin, New York, and it also runs moe.tana, a summer weekend at Pine Creek Lodge in Livingston, Montana. Two health crises have interrupted its run: Derhak was treated for oropharyngeal cancer in 2017, prompting an indefinite hiatus before he was declared cancer-free that December and the band returned to touring in February 2018, and Garvey suffered a stroke in November 2021 that temporarily cost him speech and the ability to play guitar. Nate Wilson joined during Garvey's recovery, and Garvey returned to the road full time for a winter 2023 tour. The band marked thirty-five years together with the studio album Circle of Giants in 2025. Its road dates include the Mishawaka Amphitheatre in Colorado and the Waiting Room Lounge in Omaha.
