Octave Cat

jam band · electro · indietronica

Octave Cat is a Philadelphia-based electronic trio made up of bassist Jesse Miller of Lotus, keyboardist Eli Winderman of Dopapod and drummer Charlie Patierno. The project began when Miller and Winderman found a shared interest while Winderman was demonstrating modular and vintage synthesizers, and grew into a working band once Patierno joined and the three began writing and recording together. Their self-titled debut appeared in March 2017, cut across Miner Street Studio, Rittenhouse Soundworks and the band members' home studios, and drawing on late-1970s funk-jazz fusion as much as on synthesizer music. They introduced it with three shows that same month, at Johnny Brenda's in Philadelphia, American Beauty in New York and the 8x10 in Baltimore. The EP Precarious and the concert recording Live from the Simulation followed in 2018, and the album Refract in September 2019. A third studio record, Sprezzatura, arrived on July 28, 2023, taking its title from the Italian idea of doing something difficult while making it look effortless; Miller has described the group's approach as putting jazz harmony, swing and other rhythmic ideas into a dance-music context while keeping the melodies direct. Its singles included Talk to Me, which nods to Zapp and the Headhunters, and Vader, which pairs early-2000s dance rock with disco and Moog work. The band supported the record at the High Sierra Music Festival and on dates through Baltimore, Philadelphia, Brooklyn and Bridgeport, and released Live from the Simulation vol. 2 in January 2026, drawn from shows played that November and December. Sets are largely improvised and built around vintage analog gear, which has made the group a regular on the jam circuit; its Denver dates fall at Cervantes' Masterpiece Ballroom and the adjoining Other Side.
