Goodnight, Texas is an American folk and Americana band formed in 2010 by songwriters Avi Vinocur of San Francisco and Patrick Dyer Wolf of North Carolina, named for the small Texas town that sits roughly midway between the two men's home bases. Vinocur, previously of the San Francisco rock group the Stone Foxes, sings and plays guitar, mandolin and banjo; Dyer Wolf sings and plays banjo and guitar. The pair wrote together long-distance and built the project around acoustic instruments, including a 1918 mandolin, aiming at a sound they describe as evoking earlier American eras, though later records lean harder on electric guitars and full-band arrangements. The touring lineup has included Scott Padden, Adam Nash and Chris Sugiura. Their debut, A Long Life of Living, appeared in 2012; the band hand-delivered copies to residents of Goodnight, Texas ahead of its wider release, and has since played the town itself several times. Later albums include Uncle John Farquhar, Conductor, How Long Will It Take Them To Die (2022) and Signals (2024), the last produced by Ian and Jay Pellicci in Oakland. Live releases document shows in Atlanta, Seattle and Chicago and a session recorded in the booth at Third Man Records. The song The Railroad opened the Netflix series Tiger King in 2020 and was also used in a Coors Banquet advertisement narrated by Sam Elliott, drawing heavy streaming attention to the catalog. The band has toured as support for the Dead South, Shakey Graves, Trampled by Turtles and Larkin Poe, and has appeared at South by Southwest and Austin City Limits. Vinocur has separately performed with Metallica, including the band's 2018 All Within My Hands benefit and the 2019 S&M2 concerts with the San Francisco Symphony.
