Giant Walking Robots

jam band · electronic rock · electro

Giant Walking Robots is a Denver, Colorado four-piece whose sound is rooted in reggae and dub and extends into jamtronica, drum and bass and rock. The band is George Demopoulos on bass, David Halchak on guitar and vocals, Matt Schooley on drums and vocals, and Wilson on guitar, synths and vocals, and has played and recorded together since 2019; AJ Gillman held the drum chair in an earlier lineup. Its debut EP, Out Into the Streets, arrived in December 2020 with accompanying music videos, and the studio EP Headspin followed. The group documents itself heavily on stage, issuing live recordings including a set taped at Meow Wolf in Denver in October 2022, several volumes of a numbered live series, and a night at Cervantes' Other Side. Standalone tracks range from Brick by Brick and Riots to Telephone and What U See, the last featuring Shawn Van Houten and also released in a remix by Apocalypse at the Zoo. The band describes its aim as keeping a real roots reggae feel while opening the arrangements to modern jam and improvisational playing, which puts its sets in front of reggae and jam-band audiences alike; the writing pairs melodic grooves with a heavy rhythm section and leaves room for extended dub passages. Halchak also performs with the Bob Marley tribute act Wake Up and Live.
