Wax is an American rapper and singer born Michael Jones in 1980 in Washington, D.C., raised in Dunkirk, Maryland and now based in Los Angeles. Of Irish and Cuban descent, he first recorded with his twin brother Herbal T as the duo Wax and Herbal T, whose album Grizzly Season appeared on AGP Records in 2006, following an earlier EP, Biatch!, in 2003. He built his audience on YouTube from the mid-2000s, where freestyle and comedy-inflected videos drew millions of views and led to work with creators including Ray William Johnson and an appearance in Epic Rap Battles of History. His first solo album, Liquid Courage, came out in 2008. He signed to Def Jam Recordings in March 2011 and released the mixtapes Scrublife and Eviction Notice that year, but the deal ended in August 2012 over creative differences. His single Rosana became a substantial European hit, reaching number one in Austria and the top ten in several other countries after its 2012 release and a 2013 European reissue. Since leaving Def Jam he has worked independently through his own Scrublife Records, releasing Continue in January 2013, the live album Wax Unplugged the following month, Livin Foul in 2015, The Cookout Chronicles in 2016, B.A.A.A. in 2019 and Lifetime Achievement Award in 2025. He also reunited with Herbal T and producer Lack of Afro for the 2017 EP Back In Business. Alongside music he hosts a podcast and has appeared on television, including the Netflix series Cooking on High.
