Underoath

metalcore · melodic metalcore · christian metal

Underoath is an American metalcore and post-hardcore band founded in Ocala, Florida in November 1997 and long based in Tampa. The current lineup is vocalist Spencer Chamberlain, drummer and clean vocalist Aaron Gillespie, guitarist Timothy McTague, keyboardist and programmer Christopher Dudley and bassist Grant Brandell. Gillespie is the sole remaining founding member; Dudley joined in 2000, McTague in 2001 and Brandell in 2002, and Chamberlain replaced original vocalist Dallas Taylor in 2003. That change coincided with the band's shift away from the death-metal-inflected early records Act of Depression (1999), Cries of the Past (2000) and The Changing of Times (2002) toward the screamed-and-sung format of They're Only Chasing Safety (2004), which became its commercial breakthrough. Define the Great Line followed in 2006, reaching number two on the Billboard 200; both albums were certified gold. Lost in the Sound of Separation (2008) and Ø (Disambiguation) (2010) continued the band's move toward heavier, more abstract writing, the latter recorded after Gillespie's departure. Underoath disbanded in 2013, reunited in 2015 and has toured steadily since. Erase Me (2018) marked a public break from the Christian framing that had defined the band's early identity and reception, and Voyeurist arrived in 2022. Its tenth album, The Place After This One, was released March 28, 2025 on MNRK Heavy, produced by Danen Reed Rector and mixed by Matt Huber, pushing electronic textures further into the band's metalcore arrangements. The album was supported by extensive 2025 North American touring alongside Papa Roach and Rise Against and festival appearances including Sonic Temple and Welcome to Rockville. Live, the band builds its sets on the interplay between Chamberlain's screams and Gillespie's sung choruses delivered from behind the drum kit, with Dudley's samples and programming carrying the transitions.
