Trey Hensley and His Bluegrass Band is the working band of guitarist and singer Trey Hensley, who was born in 1990 in Johnson City, Tennessee and raised in nearby Telford. He began singing gospel at six before taking up bluegrass guitar and developing the flatpicking style that became his signature, and he made his Grand Ole Opry debut at age eleven at the invitation of Marty Stuart, performing alongside Stuart and Earl Scruggs. His earliest recordings were made with the band Drivin' Force and produced by Tom T. Hall. He grew up playing at the Carter Family Fold in Hiltons, Virginia, where he also met Johnny Cash and June Carter Cash. After moving to Nashville in 2013 he formed a duo with resophonic guitarist Rob Ickes; the pair recorded for Compass Records, releasing Before the Sun Goes Down in 2015, The Country Blues in 2016, World Full of Blues in 2019 and Living in a Song. Before the Sun Goes Down was nominated for the Grammy for Best Bluegrass Album in 2016. Hensley won International Bluegrass Music Association awards for Instrumental Recorded Performance of the Year in 2016 and Recorded Event of the Year in 2017, and was named IBMA Guitar Player of the Year in 2023 and again in 2025. In 2023 he released A Tribute to the Judds on BMG, produced by Brent Maher and recorded with Ickes and Molly Tuttle, and appeared at Eric Clapton's Crossroads Guitar Festival. He won a Grammy in February 2025 as a member of the Taj Mahal Sextet, whose Swingin' Live at the Church in Tulsa took Best Traditional Blues Album. He has also performed with Ricky Skaggs, Charlie Daniels, J.D. Crowe, the Oak Ridge Boys and Peter Frampton, and now works primarily under his own name. The set draws on flatpicked bluegrass, country and blues.
