Thunder & Rain

bluegrass

Thunder and Rain is a newgrass band led by singer, songwriter and guitarist Erinn Peet Lukes. Lukes founded the group in Denver's bluegrass scene around 2013, after living in several other music cities, and the band spent its first years as a Colorado act working rooms such as Globe Hall and appearing at the Westword Music Showcase. Following a pandemic-era break, Lukes relocated to Nashville, Tennessee, where she assembled the current trio with Amelia Ransom on fiddle and vocals and Laura Ray on banjo and vocals. The reconstituted lineup leans on three-part harmony and a more traditional acoustic sound while keeping the pop, country, classic rock and old-time influences that have always shaped the band's writing, with banjo and fiddle carrying most of the drive and Lukes's image-heavy lyrics and sing-along choruses at the center. The catalogue runs to four studio albums: Holler Out, Start Believing (2017), Passing in the Night (2020) and Storybook Sessions, released in October 2024. Storybook Sessions is a nine-song set of narrative material drawn from murder ballads, folklore and suspense, including Warning Sign, Georgia Gals, Heart Is a Tombstone, Wilted Flower Waltz and Wendigos Wanderin'. The band's 2020 single Run With You was selected for the IBMA Songwriter Showcase in 2023, and its bluegrass covers have found a sizable audience on YouTube. Thunder and Rain has toured the United States, Canada, Ireland and the United Kingdom, and has shared stages with Billy Strings, the Kruger Brothers, Peter Rowan, AJ Lee and Blue Summit, and the Brothers Comatose. UK dates take the trio through folk clubs, small halls and festivals such as Shrewsbury Folk Festival.
