Them Coulee Boys
bluegrass · newgrass
Them Coulee Boys is a folk-punk Americana band from Eau Claire, Wisconsin, drawing on bluegrass, folk and rock and roll. Soren Staff, who sings and plays acoustic and electric guitar and piano, met banjo and harmonica player Beau Janke while both were working as camp counselors in northern Wisconsin in 2011; the two worked up covers before writing their own songs and bringing in Soren's brother Jens Staff on mandolin. Bassist Neil Krause and drummer Stas Hable completed the five-piece, and all five sing. The name refers to the coulees, the glacial valleys of western Wisconsin named by early French fur trappers. The band's catalog opens with a self-titled EP in 2013 and I Never Lied About Being In Love in 2014, followed by Dancing in the Dim Light in 2016, Die Happy in 2019, produced by Dave Simonett of Trampled by Turtles for Lo-Hi Records, and Namesake in 2021, produced by Grammy winner Brian Joseph. The Ten Years Tall EP arrived in 2023, and the band's fifth full-length, No Fun In The Chrysalis, was released on February 28, 2025 through Some Fun Records, with Joseph returning as producer and the sessions recorded at The Hive in Eau Claire; its songs turn on change, growth and transformation. A tenth-anniversary remaster of Dancing in the Dim Light is also available through the band's Bandcamp page. Them Coulee Boys has toured with Trampled by Turtles, Los Lobos and Old Crow Medicine Show and played the Cayamo songwriters' cruise. Its live sets swing between quiet ballads and rowdy, countrified rock and roll.
