The Wooten Brothers

blues · roots · rock

The Wooten Brothers are an American family band of siblings who play a mixture of funk, soul, R&B, jazz and blues-rooted rock. The group is Regi Wooten on guitar, Roy Wooten, known as Futureman, on drums and percussion, Joseph Wooten on keyboards and Victor Wooten on bass, all four of whom sing. Sons of military parents, the brothers were born in different states and moved frequently as children; Regi, the eldest, taught the younger ones to play and the band was complete once the youngest two had been brought in. In 1972, when Regi was fourteen and Victor five, they were hired to open shows on Curtis Mayfield's Superfly tour, and they went on to share stages with War, the Temptations, Ramsey Lewis, Stephanie Mills and Frankie Beverly and Maze. A fifth brother, Rudy, played two saxophones at once and performed with the group until his death in 2010. The brothers spent decades in separate careers: Roy and Victor co-founded Bela Fleck and the Flecktones, each winning multiple Grammy Awards, with Roy inventing the Drumitar and the RoyEl keyboard and Victor named by Rolling Stone among the greatest bass players of all time; Joseph has played keyboards and sung with the Steve Miller Band since 1993 and has recorded with Whitney Houston, Kenny G and George Clinton; Regi remained a Nashville teacher and player known for a percussive slapping and tapping guitar style. They reconvened for a reunion tour in 2023 and released the single Sweat ahead of their first studio album in decades. Live sets pair newly recorded originals with unreleased recordings the brothers made in the 1970s and 1980s.
