The Travelin' McCourys

bluegrass · progressive bluegrass

The Travelin' McCourys are a progressive bluegrass band based in Nashville, formed in 2009 as an offshoot of the Del McCoury Band. They are led by brothers Ronnie McCoury on mandolin and Rob McCoury on banjo, sons of the bluegrass bandleader Del McCoury, alongside Alan Bartram on bass, Cody Kilby on guitar, who joined in 2015, and Christian Ward on fiddle, who replaced the group's longtime fiddler Jason Carter in 2025. All five members sing. The band began when the younger McCourys and their father's rhythm section started booking dates of their own, an early tour growing out of a chance meeting with the Lee Boys at DelFest, the Maryland festival the McCoury family founded, and it has since been the outlet for the material and collaborations that sit outside Del McCoury's more traditional repertoire. Every member has won an International Bluegrass Music Association award on their instrument; Ronnie McCoury alone has taken mandolin player of the year eight times. Their self-titled debut album, released in 2018, won the Grammy Award for Best Bluegrass Album in 2019. The band also recorded Pick with Keller Williams, and in 2016 launched the Grateful Ball, a touring Grateful Dead tribute with rotating collaborators that rearranges the Dead's catalogue for acoustic string band. They have performed with the Allman Brothers Band, Phish, the String Cheese Incident, Dierks Bentley and Warren Haynes, and Rolling Stone described their 2016 DelFest set as the best of the festival. On stage the group alternates hard-driving traditional bluegrass with extended improvisation and rock material, a combination that has kept them booked on jam-band and festival bills as often as bluegrass ones.
