The Smashing Pumpkins

alternative rock · dream pop · neo-psychedelia

The Smashing Pumpkins are an American alternative rock band formed in Chicago in 1988, working across alternative rock, dream pop, shoegaze, psychedelia and heavy metal. Billy Corgan, who had moved to Chicago from Florida, met guitarist James Iha while working at a record store; bassist D'arcy Wretzky joined after a chance encounter outside a club, and jazz-trained drummer Jimmy Chamberlin completed the lineup that first played together at the Cabaret Metro on October 5, 1988. Their debut Gish (1991), produced by Butch Vig, set the template of layered guitars and quiet-to-loud dynamics. Siamese Dream (1993) reached number 10 on the Billboard 200 and sold more than four million copies in the United States, and the double album Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness (1995) entered the chart at number one, was certified diamond and won a Grammy for Best Hard Rock Performance. Adore (1998) turned toward electronics and drum machines after a period of personal upheaval, and the Machina records of 2000 returned to guitars before the band announced its breakup, playing a final show at the Metro on December 2, 2000. Corgan revived the name in 2006 with Chamberlin and guitarist Jeff Schroeder; Iha and Chamberlin were both back in the fold by 2018, and the group has since released Cyr (2020), the three-act rock opera Atum (2022 to 2023) and Aghori Mhori Mei (2024). Schroeder left in 2023 and Kiki Wong joined as touring guitarist in 2024. The current core of Corgan, Iha and Chamberlin continues to tour arenas, marking the thirtieth anniversary of Mellon Collie with a 2026 North American run that plays rooms including Climate Pledge Arena in Seattle, the Moody Center in Austin and the Kia Forum in Inglewood.
