THE SECRET SISTERS

The Secret Sisters are an Americana and country-folk duo of sisters Laura Rogers and Lydia Slagle from Muscle Shoals, Alabama. They came to attention after Laura went alone to an open audition in Nashville and was asked to come back with her sister; the pair signed to Universal Republic and released a self-titled debut on October 12, 2010, cut at Blackbird Studios with Dave Cobb producing and T Bone Burnett as executive producer. Built largely from mid-century country songs and close sibling harmony, the record drew comparisons to the Everly Brothers. Put Your Needle Down followed on Republic in 2014, after which the duo was dropped by its label and came close to bankruptcy. Brandi Carlile stepped in as producer and advocate for You Don't Own Me Anymore (New West, 2017), which brought the sisters a Grammy nomination for Best Folk Album, and produced Saturn Return (New West, 2020), which drew another Grammy nomination. Their fifth album, Mind, Man, Medicine, arrived on New West in 2024, co-produced by the sisters with John Paul White, formerly of the Civil Wars, and Ben Tanner of Alabama Shakes, and recorded close to home at FAME Studios in Muscle Shoals and Sun Drop Sound in Florence, Alabama. Guests on it include Alabama Shakes bassist Zac Cockrell, multi-instrumentalist Larry Campbell and Ray LaMontagne; the sisters have described the songs as written from a place of acceptance after both became mothers, in contrast to the pressure behind their earlier records. Earlier work includes Tomorrow Will Be Kinder, recorded for The Hunger Games: Songs from District 12 and Beyond in 2012.
