The Peasantry
The Peasantry is a Denver, Colorado duo made up of Aster Nikc and Rowan Hawk that performs theatrical folk music, describing itself as eccentric, dramatic and multi-instrumental. The pair set vocal harmonies against piano and mandolin and against percussion improvised from found objects, including an anvil and a bicycle wheel, and the songs range from nautical narrative to what the duo calls ballads for bugs. Its debut full-length, Dryport: Tales of the Sea, was released on 11 May 2025 and gathers stories of the ocean, among them a giant grouper, sirens, ghosts and the Kraken, across eight tracks: The Sand and the Sea, Rum for the Boy, Ghosts at Sea, Moonlit Lament, One-Catch, Don't Listen, Kraken and Bathysphere, the first and last of them 2025 remasters of earlier standalone recordings. Other releases include the tracks Kingdom of Beetles, Like Clockwork and Ants! (One Grain at a Time). The duo self-releases through Bandcamp and plays Denver rooms including Globe Hall, where it has headlined a bill with Halle Dean, Sebastian Skaw and Small Town American.
