The Nth Power

jam band

The Nth Power is a funk and soul group that came together out of a late-night jam at New Orleans Jazz Fest in 2012. The players in that first session were drummer and vocalist Nikki Glaspie, guitarist and vocalist Nick Cassarino, bassist Nate Edgar, keyboardist Nigel Hall and percussionist Weedie Braimah; what began as a part-time project became a working band, and after Hall's departure in 2015 Courtney Smith took over keyboards. The band's own current biography lists a core of Glaspie, Cassarino and Edgar. Each arrived with substantial credits: Glaspie toured as Beyonce's drummer and played in Dumpstaphunk, Ivan Neville's New Orleans funk band, from 2011 to 2014; Cassarino has worked with the Jennifer Hartswick Band and Big Daddy Kane; Edgar came from John Brown's Body and Groovechild. The music pairs gospel-leaning vocal harmony with soul, jazz, funk and world-beat grooves, and the band frames its material around the healing power of love, a theme Glaspie has tied directly to faith in the writing process. The first release was the independent EP Basic Minimum Skills Test in April 2013, followed by the single Thank You that December. The studio album Abundance arrived in 2015, recorded at the Music Shed in New Orleans' Garden District with producer Ira Schickman, and the live record To Be Free followed in 2016. The band's most recent album is Never Alone, with recent singles including Dream Alive, Simple Life featuring The Soul Rebels, and Smile featuring Nicholas Payton, Skerik and Dominique Xavier. Festival appearances include Electric Forest, Bear Creek, Catskill Chill and North Coast Music Festival.
