The Nields

The Nields are a folk-rock act built around sisters Nerissa and Katryna Nields, based in western Massachusetts. The group began in 1987 in McLean, Virginia, when Nerissa formed a band with David Jones and her sister Katryna, and it started performing under the Nields name in 1991 after the sisters finished college and Jones took Nerissa's surname. Katryna sings lead, Nerissa plays rhythm guitar and sings harmony, and David Nields played lead guitar until leaving in 2001. In 1994 the acoustic trio expanded into a five-piece rock band with the addition of bassist Dave Chalfant, who married Katryna in 1999, and drummer Dave Hower. After 2001 the sisters continued as a touring duo, the format they have kept since. The band self-released its early records, beginning with 66 Hoxsey Street in 1992 and Bob on the Ceiling in 1994, then moved through a sequence of labels: Razor & Tie issued Gotta Get Over Greta in 1996, Guardian and Elektra reissued it in 1997, and from 1998 the group recorded for Zoe Records, a division of Rounder, starting with Play. Later releases include The Full Catastrophe in 2012 and Circle of Days in 2023, which the band counts as its twenty-first album and which ranges from Appalachian ballad to gospel. Over the years the Nields have toured much of the United States and appeared at major folk festivals, playing with artists including Dar Williams, Moxy Fruvous and 10,000 Maniacs. The current duo show foregrounds the sisters' close vocal blend over Nerissa's guitar, and draws on a catalog now more than three decades deep.
