The Machine is a Pink Floyd tribute band formed in New York in 1988 by drummer Tahrah Cohen and guitarist Joe Pascarell. Nearly four decades on it remains one of the longest-running acts of its kind, having toured theaters and festivals across North America, Europe and Asia. Pascarell has since died, and the band's website carries a memorial to him; Cohen continues to lead the group. The current quartet pairs her with keyboardist and vocalist Scott Chasolen, guitarist and vocalist Ryan Ball, and bassist and lead vocalist Chris DeAngelis, the most recent addition. Rather than fixing on the best-known records, the band works across Pink Floyd's full fifteen-album catalog, mixing hits with deep cuts and building nights around complete album performances, audience requests, alphabetical A-to-Z setlists and extended improvisation, so that the arrangements stretch well past the studio versions. The group has appeared at Bonnaroo, Riverbend and Gathering of the Vibes, and has performed its Pink Floyd programs with symphony orchestras in Atlanta, Detroit, Pittsburgh, Jacksonville, Charlotte and San Diego as well as with the Buffalo Philharmonic. Reviewers have singled out the accuracy of the reproduction over any attempt at visual impersonation: Rolling Stone credited the band with duplicating Pink Floyd's sound, and Spin noted that the resemblance is sonic rather than theatrical. The band tours regularly through mid-sized American performing arts venues, including the Harvester Performance Center in Rocky Mount, Virginia.
