The Holdup

The Holdup is an American reggae-pop act from San Jose, California, that blends reggae with hip-hop, R&B, pop and indie rock. It began in autumn 2006 as a full band, when drummer Danny Flores and guitarist Tyler Scurti recruited vocalist Mike Garmany; bassist Kyle Christensen joined in 2007 and DJ and manager Clev Stiles soon after. The debut Stay Gold, issued on the independent Dub Rock label, reached number one on the iTunes reggae chart and stayed on the service's featured list for six weeks, and the follow-up Confidence (2010) brought an iTunes Best New Reggae Artist citation. Still Gold (2011) again topped the iTunes reggae chart and reached number two on Billboard's reggae albums chart, helped by a widely shared cover of Young Folks. Later releases include Consequence (2012), Fool's Gold, Pt. 1 (2013), the H.A.G.S. EP (2014), the sixteen-track Leaves in the Pool (2016) and Killing Time (2019). Christensen left in 2015 and was replaced by Justin Kastner, with Nick Santana on keyboards and Grant Averill on guitar rounding out the touring group. The band format wound down in 2020 after an acoustic collection and a live album, The Farewell Show, and The Holdup has since operated largely as a solo vehicle for Garmany, who writes, performs, produces and engineers his own recordings and assembles a band for the road. His catalogue has passed sixty million streams. The project returned to performing in 2024 and tours American clubs and theaters, including a 2026 run billed as the Buying Time Tour, alongside reggae festival appearances such as Reggae Rise Up.
