The Funk Hunters
The Funk Hunters are an electronic music duo from Vancouver, British Columbia, made up of Nick Middleton and Duncan Smith. The two met in 2008 at the Gulf Islands Film and Television School over a shared interest in funk and electronic dance music, and formed the project in 2009. Their work sits across future funk, glitch hop, funk, soul, electro disco and hip hop, built largely on sampling and re-cutting funk and soul source material, and has come out through labels including Westwood Recordings, Interscope and Monstercat. Their albums are Typecast, released in 2018 and issued as a double LP, and Music w/Friends, released in 2022, alongside a run of EPs including ILLectric, plus singles and remixes; collaborators have included Chali 2na and GRiZ. They have also released a sample pack through Splice, drawing on the same crate-digging approach that shapes the records. The pair present themselves simply as DJs and producers, and they are regular fixtures at Shambhala in British Columbia as well as Electric Forest and Burning Man, with touring across North America, Europe and Australia. In 2020 they became the first electronic act to receive a CIMA Road Gold certification, an award recognizing more than twenty-five thousand domestic ticket sales. Both members have built infrastructure around the act as well: Middleton founded the label Westwood Recordings in 2013, whose roster has included A.Skillz and Delhi 2 Dublin, and in 2021 co-founded Midnight Agency with Grant Paley, representing artists such as Too Many Zooz and Matthew Good. The duo continues to play club and festival dates, including rooms such as The Get Down in Portland, Oregon.
