The Brothers Comatose
bluegrass · americana · folk rock
The Brothers Comatose are a San Francisco string band formed in 2009 around brothers Ben Morrison (guitar, vocals) and Alex Morrison (banjo, vocals), who grew up in Petaluma in the North Bay and began playing together at twelve. The lineup is completed by Addie Levy on mandolin and vocals, Philip Brezina on fiddle and Steve Height on upright bass. The band plays an Americana-leaning mix of bluegrass and folk rock built on acoustic instruments but drawing its attitude from California rock and country; Ben Morrison has said the brothers respect bluegrass without having been raised on it, and the group took the phrase a fan coined for that hybrid, golden grass, as an album title. Seven studio albums have followed since the 2010 debut Songs from the Stoop, most of them on the band's own Swamp Jam Records: Respect the Van (2012), City Painted Gold (2016), Ink, Dust, and Luck (2018, on AntiFragile Music), Turning Up the Ground (2022), the children's record Ear Snacks (2023) and Golden Grass (2025). They have headlined Hardly Strictly Bluegrass, High Sierra, Outside Lands and the Kate Wolf Music Festival, sold out the Fillmore in San Francisco, and toured extensively with The Devil Makes Three, Yonder Mountain String Band and Lake Street Dive. The band also hosts its own festival, Comatopia, a string-band summit staged at the Sierra Valley Lodge in Calpine, California, north of Truckee. Management is handled by Burning House and booking by New Frontier Touring, and the group tours nationally into theatres and music halls such as Ardmore Music Hall outside Philadelphia and the Hamilton in Washington, D.C.
