TEXAS CELLOS

Texas Cellos is a Dallas-based cello ensemble and 501(c)(3) nonprofit that grew out of a pandemic-era cello choir formed in 2020. It was founded by the American cellist, educator and arts administrator Joseph Kuipers, who continues to direct it, and its stated mission is to advance cello playing while cultivating excellence in young musicians through education, ensemble work and performance. The ensemble's programs are built from transcriptions that use the cello section's full range, from bass lines to soprano melodies, and span Renaissance motets and Bach chorales through Beethoven, Mahler, Barber and Ravel to film music by composers including Ennio Morricone. Around the concert work the organization runs a cluster of education and competition programs: the Texas Cello School, the Texas Cello Grand Prix competition, the Fredericksburg Festival, and Metamorphosis Dallas, a chamber orchestra initiative. It also presents TexasCellos SESSIONS, formerly the Music at Mill Festival, which places guest artists in informal Texas venues such as clubs and breweries rather than concert halls and mixes repertoire across genres. The organization's youth education work has drawn coverage from the Dallas Morning News, NBC5 and KERA.
