SuperMagick

dance · electro-disco

SuperMagick is a Denver funk, soul and disco band that first performed in November 2003 under the name Filthy Children and took its current name in early 2016. The group started as a loose jazz outfit working local Denver clubs and moved steadily toward horn-driven funk and disco. Founding members include guitarist Bryant Walker and trombonist Jon Braddy. The seven-piece lineup sets a three-piece brass section against guitar, bass, drums and analog synthesizer behind a lead vocalist. Original singer Micah Munro left in 2010 to focus on family, and the band stalled creatively for several years before Munro personally picked her successor, Jenny Anderson, whom she had seen fronting Denver's Atomic Brass Project. Anderson, a Boston native who reached the top 100 on American Idol, came in ahead of the rebrand, which Walker has described as coinciding with a stretch of writing new original material rather than working through the old book. SuperMagick has played Colorado rooms including the Fox Theatre in Boulder, Cervantes' Masterpiece Ballroom, the Bluebird Theater and the Belly Up, and festival dates including Summerfest in Milwaukee in two consecutive years, the Breckenridge Brew Fest and the Winter Park Beer Fest. It has shared stages with Galactic, the Dirty Dozen Brass Band, the Rebirth Brass Band, and George Clinton and Parliament-Funkadelic. The sets are structured as dance shows rather than listening sets, built on sustained rhythm-section grooves under layered horn arrangements, and the band also works Front Range brewery and taproom stages such as New Terrain Brewing in Golden alongside its theatre dates.
