Sugar Britches

Sugar Britches is a Fort Collins, Colorado honky-tonk band formed in 2017 around songwriter Brian Johanson, who writes the material and fronts it on lead vocals and acoustic guitar. The band calls its own music high-brow honky-tonk and is performed by a rotating cast rather than a fixed lineup. Recent personnel include Lance Ruby on electric guitar, Zee Crain on fiddle and vocals, AJ Knight on drums and vocals, and Cam Collums and Ori Bitton alternating on electric and upright bass, with Ansel Foxley adding dobro and guest players filling in as the night requires. The group has released three albums: Don't Make Her a Mixtape Yet You Idiot (2019), No One Cares That It's Your Birthday (2022) and Terrified...And Aroused!, issued 3 October 2025, a ten-track set moving between country, folk and rockabilly and taking on addiction, romantic wreckage, spirituality and outright silliness. A standalone single, Everything Sucks, sits alongside them. Since forming the band has worked steadily through Colorado and the wider West, playing bars, parking lots, weddings, bat mitzvahs, rodeos, amphitheaters and conventional theaters. Regular Front Range appearances include the Magic Rat at The Elizabeth Hotel and KRFC 88.9's Music at the Mothership in Fort Collins, Colorado State University's Lagoon Concert Series, and the Bricks on Main series in Longmont. The songs are built on narrative and wordplay, and the instrumentation reaches wider than standard honky-tonk to fiddle, dobro and upright bass.
