Sub Urban is the recording name of Daniel Virgil Maisonneuve, an American singer, songwriter and producer born October 22, 1999, in Nyack, New York, and raised in Ridgewood, New Jersey. The son of a French-Canadian father and a Taiwanese mother, he studied classical piano from age six before quitting, saying he was tired of playing other people's compositions, and started making music on a computer at fifteen. He left high school in the autumn of 2016 to write and record full time. His single Cradles, released in January 2019, spread through TikTok, passed 100 million views on YouTube, charted on Billboard's alternative airplay listings and is certified platinum by the RIAA; it led to a deal with Warner Records, and he has also released through AWAL and NoCopyrightSounds. The EP Thrill Seeker followed in 2020, then the albums Hive (2022) and If Nevermore (2025). His single Freak reached No. 28 on Billboard's Alternative Airplay chart and has drawn more than 150 million streams. He describes his sound as mid-century pop crossed with Latin classical guitar and electronic beats, and his records pair androgynous vocals and dark-pop theatrics with bass-heavy production that touches on Latin styles, post-punk revival and EDM. He supported Aurora on her 2022 Gods We Can Touch tour and was booked on Melanie Martinez's K-12 tour before it was cancelled during the pandemic, and has headlined his own runs including the 2022 Sub Urban Winter Tour, the 2025 Anhedonia Tour and the 2026 Bell Tolls Tour. Sub Urban plays Cervantes' Other Side in Denver.
