Steely Dane

Steely Dane is a Steely Dan tribute band founded in 2010 in Madison, Wisconsin by keyboardists David Adler and David Stoler, who bill themselves as the Steely Daves. The name plays on Dane County, the Wisconsin county that contains Madison. The band began as a single tribute concert that drew on more than 30 local musicians and hardened into a permanent 14-piece ensemble scaled to match Steely Dan's own touring band, with a full rhythm section, a four-piece horn section, mallet percussion and backing vocalists. The lineup pairs Adler and Stoler on keyboards with Joey B. Banks on drums, Joe Gorman and Dennis Shepherd on guitars, Phil Lyons on bass, Thomas Mattioli on mallets, Jim Doherty on trumpet, Nick Bartell on alto saxophone, Al Falaschi on tenor saxophone, Courtney Larsen on trombone, James Cowan on percussion, and Lo Marie and Elena Ross on backing vocals. The repertoire runs past 50 songs drawn from the Steely Dan catalogue and Donald Fagen's solo records, deep enough that the group rotates setlists across a run of dates, and it also performs full front-to-back recreations of the albums The Royal Scam, Aja and Gaucho. The players are drawn from the professional Madison and Chicago scenes, and the band's own account notes that members hold instrumentalist awards and Grammy nominations from other work. Steely Dane has taken tribute-band awards, sold out theatres in markets between Chicago and Minneapolis, and appears on regional summer festival bills. It works the Midwestern theatre and performing-arts-centre circuit, including rooms such as the Stoughton Opera House in Wisconsin and the Admiral in Omaha.
