STAYIN' ALIVE - ONE NIGHT OF THE BEE GEES

electro-disco · pop rock · dance

Stayin' Alive: One Night of the Bee Gees is a Toronto-based Bee Gees tribute production founded in 2001 by Tony Mattina and Todd Sharman. Mattina, a veteran of the Toronto music scene, performs as Barry Gibb on lead vocals and guitar, and Sharman takes the Robin Gibb parts; the Maurice Gibb role has been filled by Joseph Janisse and by George Manz. The touring band around the three vocalists has included Joe Peeres on guitar, Chris Mullin on bass, Tom Wolf on drums and Cheryl Hardy on backing vocals. Sharman came to the project from earlier tribute work, having started a Tom Petty tribute called Full Moon Fever in 1992 that later became a Tragically Hip tribute. The show is built to recreate a full Bee Gees concert rather than a straight greatest-hits set, moving through the disco-era material such as Night Fever, Jive Talkin, How Deep Is Your Love and Stayin' Alive alongside the group's earlier and softer ballads, and it is staged with large-screen video clips, photographs and archival imagery. The production scales to the room: it tours as a six-piece band for theatres and clubs but has also been mounted with symphony orchestras of up to 62 musicians. The company plays roughly 80 to 100 dates a year, mostly across the United States and Canada, and has performed internationally in Mexico City, Bermuda, the Cayman Islands, Stockholm, Helsinki and Russia. It is booked almost entirely into performing arts centres and municipal theatres rather than clubs, and presenters bill it as the largest and most complete production of its kind in North America.
