Spacehog is an English alternative rock band formed in New York City in 1994 by four musicians from Leeds: Royston Langdon on bass and lead vocals, his brother Antony Langdon on rhythm guitar, Richard Steel on lead guitar and Jonny Cragg on drums. Steel replaced original guitarist Robert Curreri shortly before the group settled into its lasting shape. The sound pulls 1990s post-grunge together with 1970s glam and space rock, with David Bowie, T. Rex, Queen and Slade as acknowledged reference points, and critics have described the band as splicing Britpop melody onto American power chords. The debut album Resident Alien arrived in October 1995 on Sire and Elektra, recorded largely live in a barn in Woodstock, New York at Bearsville Studios with Bryce Goggin producing. It reached number 49 on the Billboard 200 and number 40 in the UK, and was certified gold in the United States and platinum in Canada. Its single In the Meantime, built around a sample of the Penguin Cafe Orchestra's Telephone and Rubber Band, topped the US Mainstream Rock chart for four weeks, reached number 32 on the Billboard Hot 100 and number 29 in the UK, and finished 1996 as the fourth most-played mainstream rock track of the year. Space Is the Place, Candyman and Cruel to Be Kind followed as singles. The band released The Chinese Album in 1998 and The Hogyssey in 2001 before going quiet, reconvened between 2008 and 2014, and issued As It Is on Earth in 2013. Spacehog remains active, touring the United States in 2025 on a bill shared with EMF, and its shows retain the theatrical presentation the group has used since the 1990s.
