Slow Magic is an anonymous electronic producer and performer who has released music under the tagline music by your imaginary friend since first surfacing in 2011. The identity behind the project has never been disclosed; in interviews the artist has said he likes the idea of separating the music and the art from a name, place or identity. On stage and in press images he wears a mask designed by the painter and illustrator Jonas McCluggage, originally built out of cardboard and paint, which frames a wolf-like animal face in illuminated colored stripes. The music is downtempo and indie-electronic, built on layered synths, pitched vocal samples and pop-shaped melodies, with recurring themes of nostalgia and escapism. The debut album Triangle appeared in 2012 on LebensStrasse, followed by How to Run Away in 2014 on Downtown Records, the album Float in 2017, the Away EP in 2018 and the Dreams EP. it's the end of the world, but it's ok was released on February 5, 2021 through Moving Castle, a twelve-track record with guest vocalists including Manila Killa, Runn, Paperwhite, Woven In Hiatus and Mariya Stoeva. Forgotten Feels followed on July 13, 2023, eleven tracks with contributions from Laxcity and Juuku, mastered by Tim Biesta, with creative direction, additional writing and artwork by Mariel Eve; the artist describes it as a record about loss, escapism, nostalgia and freedom made with full creative independence. The live show is built around live drumming rather than a DJ set: the masked performer plays an acoustic kit over his own tracks, a habit that began when his computer broke and he borrowed a friend's drums, and he routinely carries drums off the stage and into the audience. He has toured alongside Gold Panda, Xxyyxx and Giraffage, and works mainly at club scale.
