Skillet

christian rock · christian metal · nu metal

Skillet is an American Christian rock band formed in 1996 in Memphis, Tennessee, by singer and bassist John Cooper and guitarist Ken Steorts, who had played in the local groups Seraph and Urgent Cry. The name came from their pastor at Covenant Community Church, who likened the mix of players to southern cooking with a lot of different things thrown into one big skillet. The current lineup is John Cooper on lead vocals and bass, Korey Cooper on keyboards, rhythm guitar and backing vocals, Jen Ledger on drums and vocals, and Seth Morrison on lead guitar. The band works across Christian rock, Christian metal and nu metal, and its later records lean on arena-scaled hard rock with orchestral shading. Skillet has released twelve studio albums: Skillet (1996), Hey You, I Love Your Soul (1998), Invincible (2000), Alien Youth (2001), Collide (2003), Comatose (2006), Awake (2009), Rise (2013), Unleashed (2016), Victorious (2019), Dominion (2022) and Revolution (2024). Collide and Comatose each earned a Grammy nomination, and the band has won multiple GMA Dove Awards. Its commercial peak came with Awake, released on August 25, 2009 through Ardent, Lava and Atlantic; the album debuted at number two on the Billboard 200 and is certified double platinum in the United States. Its second single, Monster, became the band's breakthrough, reaching number four on the Billboard Mainstream Rock chart and going on to more than three billion streams worldwide. Billboard later ranked Awake among the top rock albums of its decade. Skillet released its first Christmas single, O Come, O Come Emmanuel, in November 2025, and continues to tour both the Christian and mainstream rock circuits, with a booking at the Louder Than Life festival in Louisville in 2026.
