Skerryvore is a Scottish trad-rock band formed in 2000, when Daniel Gillespie and Fraser West began playing ceilidh music together on the isle of Tiree in the Inner Hebrides. The group took its present name in 2004 from the Skerryvore lighthouse, which stands roughly twelve miles off the Tiree coast, and is now based in Glasgow. It has grown into an eight-piece: alongside Daniel Gillespie and West are Martin Gillespie, Alec Dalglish, Craig Espie, Jodie Bremaneson, Alan Scobie and Scott Wood. The arrangements set bagpipes, fiddle, accordion and whistles against guitar, bass, drums and keyboards. Where the earliest records leaned on Scottish traditional repertoire, the third album marked a turn toward original writing, and later releases absorbed rock, pop, country, Cajun and jazz elements. Skerryvore has released seven studio albums, including Chasing the Sun in 2014, Evo in 2018 and Tempus in April 2023, plus the concert record Live Across Scotland in 2020. Tempus reached number one on both the Official Scottish Albums chart and the UK folk albums chart and number 36 on the main UK chart, and three of its singles were added to the BBC Radio 2 new music playlist. The 2020 single Everyday Heroes, released during the COVID-19 pandemic, topped the Scottish singles chart. The band has been named Scotland's Live Act of the Year four times, taking Best Live Act at the MG ALBA Scots Trad Music Awards in 2011, 2016 and 2022. From 2016 to 2019 it founded and hosted its own two-day festival, Oban Live, at Mossfield Park in Oban, drawing thousands each year. Skerryvore tours well beyond Scotland, with dates across the rest of the UK, mainland Europe, the United States, Canada and Australia, and its North American runs mix folk festivals with theatres and music halls.
