SistaStrings is a sibling duo of violinist Chauntee Ross and cellist Monique Ross, originally from Milwaukee, Wisconsin and now based in Nashville. Both sisters sing as well as play. They grew up in a musical family and trained classically while absorbing the rhythm and blues, gospel and hip-hop around them, and the group's arrangements move between those traditions rather than choosing one. Their debut EP, LIFT, was released on July 11, 2019, while they were still based in Milwaukee; its five tracks are Shea Butter Dreams, Deep River, Her Name Was, Cadenza for Chauntee and Lift Every Voice, setting string writing against vocal harmony across classical, gospel, neo-soul and folk. They tour as members of Brandi Carlile's band, work that has taken them to Madison Square Garden, the Newport Folk Festival and Saturday Night Live, and they have performed or recorded with Joni Mitchell, Ed Sheeran, Mavis Staples, Maggie Rogers, Allison Russell and Jason Isbell. The Americana Music Association named them best instrumentalist in its 2023 honors. A new SistaStrings project is in progress with Brandi Carlile and Shooter Jennings producing.
