Shpongle

Shpongle is a British psychedelic electronic project formed in Chobham, Surrey in 1996 by producer Simon Posford, who also records as Hallucinogen, and flautist Raja Ram of The Infinity Project. The pair are widely credited with defining psybient, layering world-music instrumentation and vocals over psychedelic trance rhythms and ambient textures. Their studio albums are Are You Shpongled? (1998), Tales of the Inexpressible (2001), Nothing Lasts... But Nothing Is Lost (2005), Ineffable Mysteries from Shpongleland (2009), Museum of Consciousness (2013), Codex VI (2017) and Improvisations for Piano & Flute (2024), most issued through Posford's Twisted Records, with early US distribution via Kinetic. Shpongle has taken several performing shapes over its history: Posford playing DJ or live electronic sets, and a full Shpongle ensemble that has included vocalist Michele Adamson and guitarist Pete Callard alongside Raja Ram's flute. Touring productions from 2011 onward used the Shpongletron, a video-mapped stage sculpture built by visual artist Zebbler that houses the performance booth and carries projected animation. In 2018 the project announced that concerts at Red Rocks Amphitheatre in May 2019 would be its final full public shows while studio work continued, but it has since returned to the road. The Simon Posford live set has played US dates including two nights at Denver's Mission Ballroom, released as a streaming concert film in November 2025, and Posford and Raja Ram appeared together at Ozora Festival in Hungary in July 2026. A 2026 US run takes in further Denver and Oakland dates, and a London show at Troxy.
