Second Gear

bluegrass

Second Gear is a Denver-based traditional bluegrass band made up of Doug Elrick on fiddle, Chuck Tinsley on guitar and baritone vocals, Neil McLinden on mandolin, Todd Lilienthal on banjo, Dan Welch on bass and Ernie Martinez on dobro and banjo. The band describes itself as steeped in tradition, taking its repertoire and phrasing from Bill Monroe, Flatt and Scruggs, the Stanley Brothers and Larry Sparks, and leaning on trio and quartet vocal harmony rather than on jam-oriented arrangements. Its members' Colorado bluegrass experience reaches back to the 1970s; Martinez, a Lakewood multi-instrumentalist, arranger and producer who has appeared on more than 300 albums and also plays in Dustin Devine and the Real Deal and Dakota Blonde, was inducted into the Colorado Bluegrass Music Society Hall of Honor in 2011 and named International Western Music Association Instrumentalist of the Year in 2018. Second Gear's own recorded material includes the instrumental Arikaree and the song Sweet Little Mountain Girl. The group books festivals, bar gigs and private events across the Front Range and the Colorado mountain towns, listing Denver, Boulder, Fort Collins, Summit County, Vail, Aspen and Telluride among its territory along with dates in Wyoming, New Mexico and Utah. In the Denver metro it appears at the Bluegrass Lounge rooms in Arvada and at Colorado festivals such as Ciderfest.
