Sea of Flame
Sea of Flame is a Denver, Colorado hard rock and stoner rock quartet formed in 2012 by drummer James Cook and guitarist Jason Easker, who goes by Heavy. Bassist Ben Gregory and guitarist and vocalist Miles Skoog joined later to settle the current lineup. The band has four releases: a self-titled debut in August 2014, the five-track Ballast in April 2018, recorded and mixed by J Goedken with cover art by Jimbo Valentine, the EP Bristlecone in April 2023, and the six-track EP Mercury, issued 4 April 2025 under exclusive licence to Golden Robot Records, with the songs Mercury Pesado, Never Get Out of the Boat, Signal to Noise, Wires, Funkin Saweet and Inspo. Bristlecone's lead single, Pins and Needles, came out through Golden Robot's Iron Head Records imprint; Gregory has explained the album title as a reference to bristlecone pines, which live for thousands of years and grow gnarled and tenacious, a figure for the band's own slow decade. The sound is blues-founded stoner rock, with granite-weight riffs and scorching lead guitar under clean, melodic vocals; Skoog has described the aim as writing vocal melodies that draw listeners in rather than voicing a single private emotion, which sets the band slightly apart from most heavy rock in the city. Cook has said the live show is what drives their writing. After more than ten years in Denver's underground rock and metal scene the band has built a reputation on that live intensity, and works small rooms in the city such as Bar 404.
