Scott Metzger is an American guitarist working in improvisational rock, best known as a founding member of Joe Russo's Almost Dead, the band formed in 2013 to reinterpret the Grateful Dead catalogue alongside drummer Joe Russo, guitarist Tom Hamilton Jr., bassist Dave Dreiwitz and keyboardist Marco Benevento. He comes from Lambertville, New Jersey, and learned the job across the river in New Hope, Pennsylvania, where at seventeen he joined Chris Harford's Band of Changes at the club John & Peter's and played night after night beside Dean Ween, an apprenticeship he credits as the foundation of his lead playing. He toured through the 2000s with the band RANA, has played with Particle, and is part of Bustle in Your Hedgerow, the instrumental Led Zeppelin project he shares with Russo, Benevento and Dreiwitz. He leads the Telecaster trio WOLF!, formed in 2014 with bassist Jon Shaw and drummer Taylor Floreth, which released a self-titled album in 2015, 1-800-WOLF! in 2016 and Adult Entertainment on Royal Potato Family in 2022. He also plays in LaMP, the organ trio that came together at Nectar's in Burlington, Vermont in December 2018 with keyboardist Ray Paczkowski and drummer Russ Lawton, both longtime members of the Trey Anastasio Band; the group takes its name from the three surnames and has released a self-titled album in 2020 and One of Us in 2025, the latter cut largely live off the floor with minimal overdubs. His acoustic solo album Too Close to Reason appeared in 2022, and he plays in the country-swing group Showdown Kids with violinist Katie Jacoby and guitarist Simon Kafka. He names the Ramones, the Misfits, Jimi Hendrix, Eddie Hazel and the Allman Brothers Band among his formative influences.
