SCOTT LAW BAND
americana · jam band · bluegrass
Scott Law Band is fronted by Portland, Oregon guitarist, singer and songwriter Scott Law, a professional musician since January 1992 whose work spans rock, blues, bluegrass and Americana. Born in Southern California, Law moved to Seattle for high school, took a BA at the University of Washington, and settled in Portland in 2003; he founded his own imprint, Scott Law Music, in 1999 and has worked as a composer and studio player alongside his own bands. Deliver, the Scott Law Band's first record, appeared in 2005 and set a 1970s-leaning rock and funk template built on a horn section and vintage keyboard sounds. He followed it with Acoustic Collection in 2008, Living Room in 2009, and Black Mountain in 2013, an acoustic album drawing on Appalachian string-band playing rather than the electric side of his work. Law has performed with Phil Lesh & Friends, The String Cheese Incident, Leftover Salmon and The Travelin' McCourys, and with Melvin Seals of the Jerry Garcia Band, Bob Weir, Darol Anger's Republic of Strings, Aoife O'Donovan, Keller Williams, and Nicki and Tim Bluhm. His ongoing side projects include Cosmic Twang, a psychedelic country-rock band with Ross James built around improvisation and guest sit-ins, the Bakersfield-sound tribute Brokedown in Bakersfield, and the Banjo Killers, a duo with banjo player Tony Furtado. Willamette Week has credited his “ripping, old-school blues and honky-tonk guitar work,” while Acoustic Guitar has described him as an esteemed flatpicker, and those two poles mark the range his sets move across. He has kept a schedule of roughly 100 to 150 performances a year and has a signature model with the Santa Cruz Guitar Company.
