Sarah Jarosz is an American folk and Americana singer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist, born in Austin, Texas on 23 May 1991 and raised in Wimberley. She took up mandolin at ten and added guitar, clawhammer banjo and octave mandolin, playing Texas bluegrass festivals as a teenager. Sugar Hill Records signed her during her senior year of high school, and her debut Song Up in Her Head appeared in 2009. She then studied at the New England Conservatory of Music in Boston, graduating with honors in contemporary improvisation in 2013 while continuing to record, releasing Follow Me Down in 2011 and Build Me Up from Bones in 2013, both for Sugar Hill. Undercurrent, released in 2016, won Grammy Awards for Best Folk Album and, for the song House of Mercy, Best American Roots Performance. She moved to Rounder Records for World on the Ground in 2020, which won Best Americana Album, and followed it with the song cycle Blue Heron Suite in 2021, Polaroid Lovers in 2024 and Wild and Clear and Blue in 2026, the last of which won Best Folk Album while its song Ancient Light won Best American Roots Song. She is also a founding member of I'm With Her, the trio she formed in 2015 with fiddler Sara Watkins and singer Aoife O'Donovan; the group released See You Around in 2018, was named the Americana Music Association's Duo/Group of the Year that year, and won a Grammy for Best American Roots Song with Call My Name. Her live sets are built on close three-part harmony in the trio and, under her own name, on solo and small-band arrangements in which she moves between mandolin, octave mandolin, banjo and guitar across a single show.
