Sam Burchfield

Sam Burchfield is an Appalachian-rooted singer-songwriter based in Jasper, Georgia, raised in Seneca, South Carolina, in the Blue Ridge foothills. His music draws on the folk, gospel, country and Southern soul he grew up around, with traces of blues, jazz and psychedelia, and he performs with a band billed as the Scoundrels. He moved into the Athens, Georgia music scene while studying at the University of Georgia, where he took courses in the school's music business program. He auditioned for American Idol and reached the Hollywood round before walking away from the show, judging that staying on would have meant putting his own songwriting on hold. His recordings include Where to Run (2014), Unarmored (2016) and Graveyard Flower (2020), and the album Scoundrel, released March 11, 2022. Scoundrel is a loose narrative record of eleven songs turning on greed, betrayal, heartbreak, revenge and redemption, produced, mixed and engineered by Anthony Aparo and Zach Pyles, tracked at Robby's House and Zach's Garage, and mastered by Ed Brooks at Resonant Mastering. The sessions brought in Colin Agnew on drums, Robby Handley on bass and Rhett Huffman on organ and keys, with fiddle, banjo, brass and woodwinds layered across individual tracks. The touring Scoundrels have included Colin Agnew on drums, Trygve Myers on bass and Ryan Plumley on guitar, and the band works up much of its material on stage before recording it. A later album, Me & My Religion, was cut at Muscle Shoals, Alabama with producer Rachael Moore: ten songs tracked largely live across a seven-day session, turning on the search for meaning against consumer culture while staying loose in tone. Burchfield tours the Southeast and beyond steadily, playing brewery rooms, listening rooms and clubs, and keeps releasing singles between albums, including Nature Speaks.
