Russell Moore & IIIrd Tyme Out

bluegrass

Russell Moore & IIIrd Tyme Out is a bluegrass band formed in 1991 in Cumming, Georgia. The original five-piece brought together Russell Moore on guitar and lead vocals, Ray Deaton on bass, Terry Baucom on banjo, Alan Bibey on mandolin and Mike Hartgrove on fiddle; the name refers to the fact that for most of them it was a third professional band, and Moore arrived after six years singing with Doyle Lawson & Quicksilver. Rebel Records issued the self-titled debut in 1991, Puttin' New Roots Down in 1992 and Grandpa's Mandolin in 1993, the last with Barry Abernathy on banjo and Wayne Benson on mandolin, and later collected earlier material as Erase the Miles in 2004. Moore is the group's only constant member across more than a dozen studio albums, with Benson the longest-serving of the players around him after rejoining in 2007. The band won the International Bluegrass Music Association's Vocal Group of the Year award seven years running, from 1994 through 2000, and took SPBGMA honors for bluegrass vocal group and contemporary gospel group in 2001; Rebel counts more than fifty industry awards in total. Moore has been named IBMA Male Vocalist of the Year in 1994, 1997 and 2010. A 2013 Cracker Barrel release, Timeless Hits from the Past: Bluegrassed, topped Billboard's bluegrass albums chart and crossed onto the Billboard 200. Moore then launched his own label, Break A String Records, and cut It's About Tyme at Zac Brown's Southern Ground studio, releasing it in September 2015; it produced three number one singles, led the National Bluegrass Survey chart for six consecutive months and drew a 2016 IBMA Album of the Year nomination. The group continues to record and tour, issuing the single Bluegrass in 2024 and the previously unreleased New Cut Road in 2025, and returned for a thirty-first appearance at the Bluegrass First Class festival in 2026. Its repertoire mixes hard-driving traditional bluegrass with gospel quartet singing built around Moore's lead voice.
